Bats to the Rescue

Bats are often misunderstood, but they play a vital role in our ecosystems by controlling pests and supporting plant life. In this workshop, we'll explore the true nature of bats, focusing on local species and their behaviors. You'll listen to bats' echolocation, hear them sing, and learn how to create a bat-friendly garden to support these crucially important creatures.

Wonderous Wetlands

Wetlands are nature's house cleaners, crucial to the survival of over 100 native and migratory species. In this workshop, students will explore the rich diversity of Canada's wetlands across all four seasons, studying the species that live, visit, and pass through these vital ecosystems. Participants will also create their own mini wetlands to better understand the critical role these habitats play in supporting life on our planet.

Sound Ecology – Nature’s Music

Since the 5th century, composers have drawn inspiration from nature, weaving its sounds into their music. This talk explores the history of nature-themed music, from Gregorian Chant to modern compositions that blend wildlife recordings with traditional instruments. You'll also learn about the emerging field of 'Sound Ecology,' which uses recordings to track wildlife migration and species loss, highlighting the impact of climate change on our planet.

Testimonials

Testimonials from past education programs.

''The pond study was great, the students were engaged, found some great things. Presenter was full of information and learning. Good mix of listening, doing and moving.'"

Ranchview School

"Seeing all the kids so engaged at the pond was great. Initially, they were reluctant to touch any of the critters in the water, but that changed with time. They were interested in handling and checking the chart of what creatures they found. They also learned a lot from the games played."

Holy Spirit School

"Students really enjoyed it and it was well connected to the Grade 5 curriculum."

Manachaban School

"Thank you Cochrane Ecological Institute for the fun filled presentation! Our kindergarten class had an excellent and informative afternoon learning about local wildlife and how we can respectfully coexist with them.”
